The movements of the troops prior to the battle of the
7th of March 1862.

...at around 10:00 p.m. Federal
(2nd MO. [US] inf.) forward pickets on the evening of the 5th of March are fired on by Confederate
forces near Elm Springs. At about 2:00 am on the 6th of March the move begins to remove the troops to the Little
Sugar Creek defencive works. After the move is under way the and around 8:00 a.m. Confederate
forces under Brigadier General Benjamin McCulloch led by
Brigadier General James M. McIntosh, sweep up thru the Osage Prairie. Meet with the rear guard of about
600 men under Brigadier General Franz Sigel,
(the supply trains moved out with
luckily the 2nd MO. (US) infantry under Col.
Fredrick Schaefer, are ambushed by some of the far sweeping, foward units of
the Confederate advance units. With losses of 37 K/W/C ) fight a rear guard action back towards the Little Sugar Creek area and are reinforced
when they meet up with the advancing Federal force of the returning 2nd
MO. [US] infantry the 25th Illinois infantry and parts of the 44th Illinois
infantry later led by Col. P. J. Osterhaus finished the actions of the
night of the 6th of March, 1862.
